Reinventing Uses of Energy

Reinventing Uses of Energy

-Dr. Lalit Kumar Setia

To reduce emissions and control global warming, every country expressed its commitment to reinvent the uses of energy in life. There is a need to research the efficient methods of using energy, brainstorm the ideas, and imagine beyond existing uses of energy in primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors of the economies.

Reinventing Uses of Energy

Economic Development with Labour-intensive Businesses

The use of machines generates more emissions than the use of human resources. The skilled manpower with minimum wastage can reduce the waste and e-waste with effective and efficient use of resources. There is a need to work upon ‘zero-defect outputs’ so that wastage of resources can be minimized.

Promoting Alternate Sources of Energy

The dependence on oil, coal, and gas and the increasing use of these items is also a major source of carbon emissions. The promotion of alternate sources of energy can reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. The solar capacity can be increased, for example, at present India has 40 Gigawatts of energy generated and used from solar sources while the potential is more than 5600 Gigawatts, therefore it is need of the hour to work upon it and promote the solar energy resources to the extent possible.

New opportunities for Employment

The paradigm shifts from conventional to alternate sources of energy will create huge opportunities for employed youth to work upon. The funding of such projects in developing and underdeveloped economies will boost economic growth and will also improve the availability of land and water around the world.

Electrification with Wind and Solar Energy Sources

The reforms in the power sector for re-electrification of villages, cities, and metro cities around the world will increase the rate of economic growth. The replacement of coal and gas-based power generation with wind and solar-based plants in a systematic way; will make the countries vibrant and the level of pollution in the air will reduce significantly. Like digitalization using information technology and demonetization using e-currencies, the shift to non-conventional energy sources will make the future bright for the whole of mankind.

Sustainable and Continuous Development in Eco-friendly mode

Till today, the world touched new heights of development but at the same time, the level of carbon emissions also increased with the level of economic development. The reinventing of uses of energy will give us a way to develop the economies in sustainable ways by keeping the pollution levels in control. The new tools of technology will be promoted around the world and cleanliness will also increase the health of the whole mankind. The mining activities for obtaining coal, oil, and gas will be decreased year after year and clean sources of energy will be promoted to meet the increasing energy requirements of the countries.

Conclusion

With the increase in the quantum of clean energy on the earth, the global warming and climate change problems will definitely be sorted out.

Clean Energy - Bright Future
Tackling Climate Change

The increasing number of industries, use of coal and oil in factories and vehicles, etc. are affecting the environment very adversely and there is huge emission of greenhouse gases. In November 2021, more than 20,000 experts discussed the issues relating to climate change, increasing pollution levels, new threats to the environment, etc. in Glasgow, Scotland. It is fact that carbon emissions are increasing year after year and due to climate change, imbalances are happening in the geographical positions of the earth. There is a need to reduce the dependence on coal, oil, and gas by switching over to sources of energy from renewable sources. With the use of solar energy to a great extent, it is possible to tackle the problem of climate change.

Solar Energy – Clean Energy

The sun is full of heat and the heat can be used to produce energy. Solar equipment is available to transform the heat of the sun into solar energy without pollution. India, one of the developing nations of the world, expressed its interest to reduce the dependence very strategically. Sustainability in meeting energy requirements is possible only through using clean energy sources including solar energy. With the use of solar energy to a great extent, it is possible to reduce the level of global warming.

Solar energy – Huge Potential

The scientists of the whole world are making efforts to invent new weapons, atomic bombs, and using research to find out tools of destruction; however, a few are working to increase the use of sustainable energy sources including Solar energy. There are three sectors of the economy – primary, secondary, and tertiary. In all sectors, it is possible to introduce uses of Solar energy and replace it with the use of coal, oil, and gas.

Electricity generation using clean energy

The electricity generation through solar is not only clean but also cheaper. The huge potential of generating electricity is required to be met by using solar rooftops, building smart solar cities, and introducing new innovative solar-based products. The initiatives of the Government in the Agricultural sector, industries, and buildings around the world, saved a lot of coal, oil, and gas. The momentum is to increase and there is a need to build ultra-mega solar parks. In India, 60% of the Delhi Metro energy requirement can be met with 24% solar power of the park, it is an example, how India is planning and moving towards achieving the goals of using solar energy in all sectors of the economy.

Electrical Vehicles – A tool to reduce dependence on Petroleum Products

The Indians are committed to using electrical vehicles, modes of public transportation, and pooling transportation mean to save maximum petroleum products so that carbon emissions can be reduced significantly. The full utilization of water, electricity, and other energy sources with innovative products and services, reduced the level of pollution in most parts of the country.

Solutions to Environmental Crisis

Solutions to Environmental Crisis

By Dr. Lalit Kumar Setia |  @drlalitsetia  |  drlalitsetia@gmail.com

In ancient times, every person was so sensitive to create any waste and the waste created by any family was usually used inside the home and there was no waste contributed to the society. In scriptures, the solution of environmental crisis is well described. With the advancement, the cultural values diminished and now-a-days, everywhere the management of waste became a major problem leading the environmental crisis. People in metro cities started to purchase Oxygen cylinders to get rid of polluted air. Can it be a solution? What should be done to solve the problem permanently? What Government can do and what each person on this earth can do?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Reform (4 Rs)

The government as well as citizens should reduce the waste by being sensitive in using the products. The life-style should be improved in such a way that the waste can be minimized significantly. In scriptures, it is written that a house should use its waste inside so that it cannot put burden on the other persons outside the house. The waste water from washing clothes can be purified and used for the plants’ growth; an example of the same can be seen at Dera Sacha Sauda, Sirsa located in India. The waste from kitchen if consumable should be provided directly to feed the animals. The waste from kitchen and dressing room which can be reused should be reused by using the skills of art and craft. It can also improve the income of the family.
In case, the waste cannot be reused, it should be properly thrown inside the green or blue dustbins as per the directions of Government so that the waste can easily be recycled by using the approach of Solid Waste Management (SWM).

Funding Solid Waste Management Factories:

There is huge unemployment around the world, particularly in developing and underdeveloped countries. The Government can provide funds for setting up factories for solid waste management at large level, it will boost the employment and also solve the environmental crisis. In most of the developed nations, there are environmental inspectors, entrusted to ensure the green environment in various areas of the countries. They are empowered to impose fines and penalty for misuse of natural resources. In India, this role is played by municipal organization at local level.
To reform the SWM sector, it is must to provide enough funds for setting up factories at local level so that the waste can easily be recycled everywhere. The licenses should be given to the organizations for converting waste into finished products so that the waste can also be a medium of economic progress of the nation.

Opportunity to set up Micro-factories to generate employment:

Now-a-days, the waste of cities disposed-off in the fields of villagers and the agricultural activities are also polluted due to such illegal disposing of the waste. It is required to set up micro factories at local level in each city. The micro-factories can manage the solid waste and there will be no need to cover huge distances to carry the waste from one location to another. The waste from domestic as well as industries which usually cover several types of plastic, glass, furniture, paper can easily be recycled in the micro factories and produce finished products. Setting up micro-factories will generate a lot of employment. The entrepreneurs should be provided enough funds to move in this area and change the whole picture of the nation.
Once the micro-factories are set up, the finished products should be sold with the support from the government. The government should not impose taxes upon the products manufactured in micro-factories so that their sales can easily be increased at affordable prices. It will lead to a permanent solution to the environmental crisis.
Work from Home (an option for Energy Efficiency):
The Multinational Companies (MNCs) have already opted to provide employment on "Work from Home" basis as it saves their infrastructure, time, money, and other resources. It also solve the problem of environmental pollution as the number of natural resources are utilized efficiently. The energy efficiency is the key to sort out the problem of pollution.

Energy Deficit to Energy Surplus

Energy Deficit to Energy Surplus

By Dr. Lalit Kumar Setia |  @drlalitsetia  |  drlalitsetia@gmail.com

Import of Crude in India:

The biggest concern which make the Indian Government worried is crude oil imports in quantity followed by falling value of currency; leading to huge increasing burden on economy due to energy deficit. In August 2018, the dollar becomes costlier to Rs. 70.32 and India’s import of crude is quantified to be 227 Million Tonnes (MT) during 2018-19 which was 220.43 MT during 2017-18. It is worth to mention here that India meet its oil needs more than 80% from imports and spent 5 to 6 lac crores of rupees (i.e. 80 to 90 billions of Dollars) every year.
Energy Deficit to Energy Surplus

Depreciation in Indian Rupee and Energy Deficit affecting Common Man:

The depreciating value of rupee harms Indian economy because the imports are more than the exports. In case, the exports are increased more than imports, then the depreciating rupee will not pinch the economy because the exporters are benefited with the depreciation in currency as they realize more value from their sales in foreign currencies.

The energy deficit which is due to rise in the demand of energy by the Indians, ultimately making India more dependent by increasing the import of oil and coal, known as fossil fuels. With rise in imports the rupee value depreciates due to increase in the Current Account Deficit of India. It also leads to higher cost of crude for the Oil Marketing Companies and the companies pass the increase in cost to the consumers in form of increasing the prices of Petrol and Diesel products.

The Government of India (GoI) implemented Rural Electrification to connect the un-electrified villages under its scheme, ‘Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY)’. Further to reduce the burden of energy deficit upon common men, the Government started a movement known as UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) and distributed LED bulbs at subsidized rates. The power reforms through Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana or UDAY transformed the power sector of States by issuing UDAY bonds to Distributing Companies (DISCOMs). Various Apps supported the economy to transform the whole energy sector; such as:

·       Vidyut Pravah (Power Availability & Price) App to provide real-time information both availability and price of electricity;

·   URJA (Urban Jyoti Abhiyaan) App to show the performance of DISCOM along with data of Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS);

·    TARANG (Transmission System Monitoring) App to check the progress of Transmission System;

·      Urja Mitra App to help the citizens accessing the power outage information of the DISCOMs.

Moving towards Energy Surplus to survive in Global Market:

India can survive in global market only by reducing its imports in comparison with exports in value of money. It is possible to reduce the imports of crude oil by framing policies to reduce the number of vehicles, adopting the e-solutions to meet the requirements, and innovate the products can be replaced for meeting the energy demand instead of increasing the dependency on crude oil.India dreams to be energy surplus and struggling for it from last five decades. Instead of initiatives to fulfill the dream, the energy deficit is increasing year after year. The intellectual persons who can fulfill the dream are setting their life in abroad to live a healthy and wealthy life. It is time to frame and implement initiatives to retain the talent and build the spirit of entrepreneurship. The power sector reforms during the last decade, transformed the whole economy and the focus upon increasing solar energy further making the possibilities of excess electricity generation. In March 2014, India has the total power capacity of 243 GW which increased to 320 GW in March 2017; it made the energy shorage from 42428 Million Units (MUs) to 7459 Million Units (MUs) in March 2017. The energy efficiencies are continuously increasing and India has become self sufficient to meet its rising demand of energy. Soon it will realize the aim of self-sufficiency in power sector. India has already become from net importer to net exporter of electricity and exported 5798 MUs to Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar in the year 2016-17.   Employment Generation and Talent Retention:The entrepreneurship skills are the key to generate managers. India has plenty of resources which are not being used due to lack of entrepreneurial skills in Indians and it is required to start the momentum by offering benefits to entrepreneurs particularly who are born in India. The Indians who are being employed around the world should be called back by offering monetary benefits so that they can help India grow professionally at par with the developed nations of the world.

Technology to improve Entrepreneurial Resources:

In order to boost startup India, there are avenues offered by various international companies like Whatsapp offered Rs. 1.8 crores to new Indian Startups in Feb 2019 for those five top winners who win in the competition. It is must to encourage such competition to boost the creativity of the entrepreneurs and support innovation in Indian economy.

Discouraging Excess use of Energy Resources:

In India, it is required to discourage excess use of energy resources by increasing the rates or tariff for more consumption. However, in case of electricity consumption, the charges or tariff for the more consumption of electricity is higher after first 200 units. Even the consumers are classified into four categories i.e. Domestic, Commercial, Industrial, and Agricultural.
In August 2019, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) reduced fixed charges and increased tariffs in Delhi, to control the excess use of energy. For consumers with electricity load up to 2 Kilo Watt i.e. small shopkeepers, BPL families, and small families; the fixed energy charges are slashed significantly i.e. from Rs. 125 to Rs. 20. Even for the consumers with electricity load from 2 KW to 5 KW which covered mostly all domestic and commercial consumers; the fixed energy charges slashed from Rs. 140 to Rs. 50. For the consumers with electricity load from 5 KW to 15 KW which covered domestic consumers and small scale industries, cottage industries etc; the fixed charges slashed from Rs. 175 to Rs. 100. It is to encourage the consumers to not increase their electricity load. Even the consumers with excess load, can decrease their load and get it reexamined to get the benefit of slashed fixed charges.
In order to discourage the excess use of electricity, for domestic consumers, the tariff for the units above 1200 units made Rs. 8 per unit earlier it was Rs. 7.75 per unit. While in case of industrial consumers, the tariff revised from Rs. 7.25 per unit to Rs. 7.75 per unit*.
